TATA GROUP - Nation Builder

For over a century now, the name Tata has been a watchword for values that have withstood both the ravages of time and the vagaries of business.The Tata group is India' largest business house, with revenues of Rs 967,229 million in 2005-06, the equivalent of about 2.8% of India GDP.The group takes name from its founder,Jamsetji tata.
Jamshetji Tata was born into a parsi family on march 3,1839.His first business initiatives were cloths mills in the interior if of Maharashtra. In 1903, he built the first large hotel in India,the TajMahal Hotel,in Mumbai.This was the foundation for the Indian Hotels Company,which runs the renowned Taj Group of Hotels.Tata steel was India's first private iron and steel company, established in jamshedpur in 1907.His dream was to make India the most advance nation in the world. To this end, the group diversified into various industries such as consumer goods, aviation and locomotive and motoring manufacturing.The Groups main business are spread over seven important sectors: services, materials, engineering, energy, consumer products, chemicals and communication and information system. In a move that stunned the business world in January 2007, Tata steel clinched a deal to buy the UK based Corus Group Plc. one of the leading steel producer,for 6.7 million pounds.
The Tata Group's objective has always been to improve the quality of life in the communities it serves.Its contribution to India's education, science and technology is widely documented and appreciated.The Group has, over decades, made many pioneer initiatives in aviation, steel industry, hospitality, consumer durables and corporate welfare.
